There is a popular thread in the Vo IP Forums that discusses the need for users of the popular Cisco ATA-186 to be able to download H.323 or SIP firmware for the Cisco ATA-186. Coincidentally, I was Googling ATA 186 SIP Firmware and I came across a past Internet Telephony article of mine written in July 2003 titled The Amazing Cisco ATA-186 And Top ITSPs Compared where I discussed how to hack the Cisco ATA-186 so you can download SIP or H.323 firmware. Prerequisites Requirements Cisco recommends that you have knowledge of basic operational characteristics of the ATA. Refer to the Cisco ATA 186 Basic Configuration for further background information. Upgrade Methods for the ATA 186 There are two ways to upgrade the software in an ATA device: Executable File Method TFTP Method Both of these methods are simple once understood. The first method involves a degree of manual interaction while the second method is more automated. A common mistake is to leave the TFTP enabled when you manually upgrade an ATA. After a reboot, the ATA fetches the profile from the specified TFTP server and overrides the manual upgrade. Check the Use Tftp parameter and make sure it is set to 0 prior to the manual upgrade. Note: ATA software version 1.xx does not support the TFTP upgrade method. You need to use the Executable File method to upgrade ATA with versions lower than 2.xx. In addition, there are two important rules you need to know before you upgrade a system: If the ATA runs version 1.34 or earlier you cannot upgrade directly to version 2.10 or later.
