[ Return to Windows Media Player: LSU Overview]   Windows Media Player 11 does not come with the codecs needed to play DVDs on a fresh install.  Codecs are various software needed to play different formats of video files. For example, DVDs require the MPEG-2 codec.  If you try and play a DVD without having the MPEG-2 codec installed, an error message such as this one should appear: In order to download and install the right software to play DVDs on Windows Media Player 11, Microsoft provides a list of approved commercial codecs found HERE. Refer to the individual codec documentation for instructions on how to install them, but it should be rather straightforward. After installing the codec, DVDs should be able to play.  If you are still having problems playing DVDs (such as no sound or stuttering video try downloading a different codec to see if it works better.  Updating video and sound drivers may also help. If you are running Windows XP and still have problems after installing a codec, download the Video Decoder Checkup Utility from HERE.  This program will show a list of all MPEG-2 compatible codecs installed on your computer.  Click on the one you wish to use and press the ' Set as Preferred' button.  Even if it warns that the codec is not compatible with certain features of Media Player 11, it may still be able to be used to play DVDs. NOTE: Only original DVDs may be used in Windows Media Player 11. Windows Media Player 11 does not allow for the ripping of movies to a separate DVD, due to encryption and copyright codes/laws.  However DVD data discs, containing music and video files, are capable of being ripped. Many home DVD players are not compatible with data DVDs, and the DVD player credentials should be consulted for further details. Referenced from: Microsoft.com Article ID: 5022 Last Updated: AM.

Why every time someone asks why there is no sound in WMP the given answers are always reinstall/update drivers or install codecs? Ok, here's the thing. I have been having the same issue in Windows 7 (both x86 and x64). The first time I ignored the problem and just used VLC as my default video player since I rarely use WMP anyways. This led to a WMP corrupted dtabase issue and ended in a complete corruption on my user account and OS in whole. After I reinstalled the OS I started to watch more carefully what happens. Here are my observations: 1. What actually causes the issue in the first place is that from some point when you start a DVD, AWI or any other video associated with WMP by double clicking (or any other automatic WMP launch action) WMP opens not only the video player but also a photo viewer which becomes invisible as soon as the player starts. From this point the sound disappears and what users can see is simply no sound in videos. The solution here would be to close the video player and then kill the photo viewer process from the task manager (the viewer will be there and it shouldn't) and any other media player process you see there. There should be no WMP applications opened at this moment (check the task manager to be sure that nothing is running in background). Then try to run WMP directly and then launch the AWI, DVD or whatever thingy from the WMP menus. This way it seems to work. 2. Another thing I would recommend is to restore the media library often. To do this just select Tools -> Advanced -> Restore media library. from the main menu in WMP. And for the love of god do NOT use the WMP media library. There are plenty of awesome software which is much better.
