Printer Friendly Version If you have plugged in a USB device (usually a mass storage device) into a computer and it doesnt work, here are some basic troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem. First, you want to rule out any problems with the device itself. A good way to do this is to plug the USB device into a different computer to see if it works there. If it does not work in a different computer, then the problem is with the device itself. USB devices, although very handy and portable can fail just like any other device. However, if the USB device works in another computer system, then the problem lies with the configuration of the computer where the device did not work. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot this scenario and make your USB device work again. 1) If you are using a USB cable with your device, check the cable to make sure it matches the speed of the device. Use USB 2.0 cables with USB 2.0 devices and USB 1.1 cables with USB 1.1 devices. Swap cables and check the device, if this does not work, proceed to Step 2.2) Next, open Device Manager and look under the heading for USB Serial Bus Controllers. If there is a device with a yellow exclamation mark next to it such as USB Mass Storage Device. Double-click on the entry and check the Device Status. If the status shows something like This device cannot start. ( Code 10) proceed to Step 3.3) The easiest way to solve a USB error code 10 in Windows XP is to follow the steps below to remove and reinstall all USB controllers. A. Click on Start B. Right Click on My Computer, click on Properties C. Click on the Hardware tab D. Click the Device Manager button. E. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers section. F. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. G. Restart the computer, and allow the computer to reinstall the USB.
1 Mass Storage Device error code 10. Drivers failing to install. I keep getting a message saying drivers failed to install correctly and a yellow exclamation mark next to the USB mass storage device (error code 10) when I look in Device Manager. I've don't really know where to start with any of this but I am thankfully quite good at following instructions so fingers crossed someone can help me out! It isn't proving to be a problem with USB keys but my printer ( Brother MFC-235 C) isn't being recognised at all now and was previously just initiating driver installation but obviously then I was getting the failed message. Any help would be hugely appreciated as a student without access to a printer is a small disaster! None of the USB ports work anymore on my HP Elite Book 2540p laptop which is running Windows 7 Pro SP1. By not working, I mean if I try plugging in a thumbdrive or external HDD it does nothing whereas they work perfectly on other machines. I've tried just about everything and no luck. It gets stuck and doesn't complete the process if I try from the device-manager to uninstall, update, or scan for changes concerning the drivers. I've also tried to use the Microsoft Fix It tool which just hangs there and does nothing as well. I've left things running overnight with each of these attempts and it just hangs there endlessly. The properties for each port claim the device is working properly. Please, help me figure out how to get my USB ports working again! Edit 1 - I have tried booting off my Fedora Live CD and the USB ports work fine which indicates that it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. I need to get the ports working again in Windows though. Edit 2 - I tried using the Microsoft USB View tool, but don't know how to interpret the output. Anyhow, when I plug in my thumbdrive a yellow circle with an exclamation mark comes up for that USB port and it says Device Connected. Here is the full output in case anyone can make sense of it and determine what problem(s) may exist: Device Descriptor: bcd USB: 0x0200 b Device Class: 0x00 b Device Sub Class: 0x00 b Device Protocol: 0x00 b Max Packet Size0: 0x40 (64) id Vendor: 0x8564 id Product: 0x1000 bcd Device: 0x0100 i Manufacturer: 0x01 0x0409: Jet Flash i Product: 0x02 0x0409: Mass Storage Device i Serial Number: 0x03 0x0409: VYWCFQTO b Num Configurations: 0x01 Connection Status: Device Connected Current Config Value: 0x00 Device Bus Speed: High Device Address: 0x05 Open Pipes: 0 Configuration Descriptor: w Total Length: 0x0020 b Num Interfaces: 0x01 b Configuration Value: 0x01 i Configuration: 0x00 bm Attributes: 0x80 ( Bus Powered ) Max Power: 0x32 (100 Ma).
